Countries visited: how they're counted
Understand how Galmund tracks and highlights the countries you've visited on your globe.

Galmund highlights every country where you have travel memories — turning your globe into a map of your life.
How a country becomes highlighted
A country is highlighted on your globe one of two ways:
- You have a memory there — at least one photo or video with a location inside that country.
- You marked it visited yourself — no memory required. Hover the country on the globe (Desktop) and use the visited toggle in its tooltip, or search for it directly in the Gallery's Add a country you have visited… field.
Either way, the highlight updates instantly.

What the highlight means
- Dark countries — not marked visited, and no memories there
- Highlighted countries — marked visited, with or without a memory yet
- Countries with a magnet — have at least one memory; see country magnets for what that reward looks like
- Your home country — shown with a subtle state/province layer if the "Show states" option is on in your profile
💡 A country you marked visited without a memory can be unmarked any time from the same tooltip or from its card in the Gallery. Once it has a memory, that's no longer possible — the country stays visited until you delete every memory in it.
How the country count works
Your visited country total is calculated by Galmund's internal list of ~195 recognized countries (following ISO 3166-1 standards). The count is shown in your profile stats panel.
💡 If you have memories in overseas territories (like the Canary Islands or Hawaii), they count under Spain and the United States respectively — not as separate countries.
Trips vs. memories
- Memories — past events you've uploaded (photos/videos). These count towards your visited countries.
- Trips — future or planned travel. These do not count as visited until you upload memories from them.
Colour per trip
When you open a trip in the Trip Planner, the country or countries of that trip are highlighted in a distinct colour on the globe — separate from your visited countries. This disappears when you close the planner.
Frequently asked questions
Does flying over a country count as visiting it?
Not on its own. A layover doesn't highlight a country unless you upload a memory from it, or add it manually. Nothing marks a country visited automatically just because you passed through.
I visited a country but it's not highlighted. Why?
Highlighting only happens two ways: uploading at least one memory (photo or video) from that country, or marking it visited yourself — from the country's tooltip on the globe (Desktop), or by searching for it in the Gallery. Nothing is inferred automatically from anything else.
Can I mark or unmark a country as visited without a memory?
Yes. Hover a country on the globe (Desktop) and use the visited toggle in its tooltip, or add/remove it directly in the Gallery's country search — it highlights right away, with a dashed placeholder card in the Gallery until you add a memory. Unmarking only works before the country has a memory; once it has at least one (and its magnet), delete the memories first if you want it removed.
How are territories and dependencies handled?
Some territories (e.g. French Guiana, Puerto Rico) are counted under their parent country. Others with distinct identities are counted separately. The list follows ISO 3166-1 country codes.
Can I see a count of how many countries I've visited?
Yes. Hover over your profile picture on the globe to see your stats panel, which shows the total number of countries visited and other key numbers.
