Krabi itinerary 5 days: Ao Nang, Railay, Phi Phi Islands and Tiger Cave

5 days · 3 cities

← Back to the Guide

This Krabi itinerary for 5 days uses a single hotel in Ao Nang: boats to Railay and the Phi Phi Islands leave from there, and Day 4 goes inland by car. That way you never waste time hopping islands with luggage.

In short: Ao Nang beach, Railay, the Phi Phi Islands with Maya Bay, Tiger Cave and the Emerald Pool, and Krabi Town before your flight. Visa, season and food are at the end.

Day 1: Ao Nang beach and sunset at Noppharat Thara

Ao Nang beach: the seafront and the southern cliffs

The airport is 40 minutes away by van. After check-in, walk down to the beach and follow the seafront to the southern end, where limestone cliffs drop into the sea and the Railay boat counters sit: check tomorrow's first departure. An hour and a half, with a swim.

Noppharat Thara: sunset without the crowds

Walk 1.5 km northwest along the beach road to Noppharat Thara, the national park headquarters and much calmer than Ao Nang. At low tide you can walk the sandbars out to the islets. The sun sets around 6pm. Head back to central Ao Nang for dinner.

Day 2: Railay and Phra Nang beach

Railay West: the beach you can only reach by boat

Longtails leave from the southern end of Ao Nang once eight people are on board and take 15 minutes; the ride costs about THB 100 by day. Arrive early, before 9am, to have the beach almost to yourself. Railay has no road: the cliffs cut the peninsula off, which is why climbers come from all over the world. Two and a half hours on the beach.

Phra Nang beach: the princess cave and the viewpoint

Cross the walkway to Railay East, five minutes, and follow the path under the cliff to Phra Nang. The princess cave at the end of the beach holds fishermen's offerings. On the way is the viewpoint trail: a steep 20-minute climb with ropes and red mud, trainers only. The descent to the hidden lagoon is dangerous and worth skipping.

Be back at Railay West by 6pm: after that boats get pricier and rarer.

Day 3: Phi Phi Islands, Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay

Viking Cave: the swiftlet nest cave

Speedboats leave Ao Nang or Noppharat Thara pier around 8.30am and reach Phi Phi Le in an hour. Viking Cave is seen from the boat: entry is banned because swiftlet nests for bird's nest soup are harvested there. Fifteen minutes.

Pileh Lagoon: swimming inside the cliffs

Just south, Pileh Lagoon is an almost enclosed inlet of calm green water. This, not Maya Bay, is where tours stop to swim and snorkel. Forty-five minutes.

Maya Bay: how to visit the beach from The Beach

Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September and reopened on 1 October 2026. Boats no longer enter the bay: they dock at the Loh Samah pier on the other side, and a boardwalk leads to the sand. Swimming is banned, you can only paddle, and the visit lasts about an hour.

Tours continue to lunch on Phi Phi Don and are back in Ao Nang around 3pm. The THB 400 park fee is sometimes not included: ask before you pay.

Day 4: Tiger Cave Temple and the Emerald Pool

Hire a car with driver for the day and leave at 7am: the temple is 30 minutes from Ao Nang, and the climb of more than 1,200 steps takes about an hour, best done before the heat. At the top are a golden Buddha and 360-degree views over the limestone hills. Entry is free; cover shoulders and knees, carry water and keep food away from the monkeys.

Emerald Pool: the natural pool in the Thung Teao forest

An hour southeast by car brings you to Khlong Thom. A 1.4 km forest trail reaches the Emerald Pool, warm green water you can swim in, and continues 800 metres to the Blue Pool, where swimming is banned and the colour depends on the rain. Entry is THB 400 and it opens at 8.30am; arrive before 11am, when tour groups fill the water.

Seven kilometres away is the Khlong Thom hot spring waterfall, where thermal water runs down stone steps. Return to Ao Nang mid afternoon.

Day 5: Krabi Town, Khao Khanap Nam and the flight home

Wat Kaew Korawaram: Krabi Town's white temple

Check out and drive to Krabi Town, 30 minutes. The white temple sits at the top of a staircase guarded by nagas, and the hall has colourful murals. Half an hour, free.

Khao Khanap Nam: the twin hills in the Krabi River

Walk 700 metres to the town pier and agree on a longtail to the two limestone hills guarding the river mouth, Krabi's emblem. The boat stops at a stalactite cave and returns through the mangroves. An hour and a half, price per boat agreed at the pier.

The airport is 25 minutes from town. Flights to Bangkok take 1h20.

Do you need a visa for Thailand?

Since 15 September 2026, citizens of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and most of Europe can stay up to 30 days visa-free, down from 60. Check your nationality on the official list before booking a longer trip.

Everyone must complete the TDAC, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, on the official immigration site within three days before arrival. It is free; ignore sites that charge. Your passport must be valid for six months.

When is the best time to visit Krabi?

From November to April, the dry season, the Andaman Sea is calm and boat trips are rarely cancelled. December to February is high season, with higher prices; March and April are hotter and cheaper.

From May to October it rains almost daily and the sea gets rough: Phi Phi speedboats are often cancelled, and Maya Bay closes in August and September.

How to get to Krabi and get around

Fly to Bangkok and take the 1h20 domestic flight to Krabi, which also has flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. From the airport to Ao Nang is 40 minutes by shared van or taxi.

Ao Nang is walkable, and songthaews, pickup trucks with benches, link the beach to Krabi Town. For Railay take a longtail; for Phi Phi a speedboat tour; for Day 4 a car with driver, which costs less than renting and driving on the left.

Where to eat in Krabi: southern Thai dishes and night markets

Southern food is spicier than Bangkok's. Try gaeng som, a sour fish curry with turmeric, and khao mok gai, yellow rice with chicken from the Muslim kitchen, strong in Krabi. Grilled fish with lime and chilli and a banana roti off the griddle round off the night.

The best place to try it all cheaply is the Krabi Town night market, the Walking Street, Friday to Sunday from 5pm, with food stalls and traditional dance shows.

On other days, food stalls set up near the town pier every evening. In Ao Nang, the streets behind the beach have simple Thai restaurants, cheaper than the seafront ones.

What to avoid: seafood sold by weight on the Ao Nang seafront without asking the price per kilo first, and tours promising a swim at Maya Bay, which is banned.

Are 5 days enough for Krabi?

Yes, for Ao Nang, Railay, the Phi Phi Islands, the inland day with Tiger Cave and the Emerald Pool, and Krabi Town. With one more day, do the four islands tour or kayak the Ao Thalane mangroves.
