AlUla itinerary 4 days: Hegra, Elephant Rock, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

4 days · 2 cities

← Back to the Guide

This AlUla itinerary for 4 days uses one hotel and a rental car, because the sites are up to 25 km apart and there is no public transport. Hegra and Dadan can only be visited on timed tours: book before you travel.

In short: Elephant Rock and Old Town, Hegra and Maraya, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, and the oasis before your flight. Visa, season and food are at the end.

Day 1: Elephant Rock at sunset and Old Town

The airport is 35 minutes from town. After check-in, drive 11 km northeast to Jabal AlFil, the 52-metre rock with a trunk carved by the wind. Entry is free. Arrive an hour before sunset, around 5.30pm in winter, and grab one of the low lounge seats. An hour and a half.

AlUla Old Town: the mudbrick lanes at night

Head back for dinner in Old Town, a maze of about 900 mudbrick houses lived in until the 1980s. The restored street gathers shops, cafés and restaurants open until midnight. Next door is the AlJadidah Arts District, a neighbourhood of murals and studios for an after-dinner walk. Two hours.

Day 2: Hegra, the Nabataean city, and Maraya

Jabal Ithlib: the Diwan and Hegra's sacred canyon

Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, can only be visited on a tour. The Hegra Day Tour bus leaves from Winter Park, 5 km from town, and the visit takes two to three hours, from SAR 95. Book on the Experience AlUla website and take the 9.30am slot, before the heat.

The first stop is usually Jabal Ithlib, home to the Diwan, a hall cut into the rock for ritual banquets, and a narrow canyon with cult niches. One hour.

Qasr al-Farid: the unfinished tomb of Lihyan

The tour ends at Qasr al-Farid, the tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza and Hegra's most photographed facade. Carved into a lone outcrop in the first century, it was never finished: the rough lower part shows the Nabataeans worked from the top down. If you have seen Petra, you will recognise the style. Forty-five minutes.

Maraya: the mirror building in the Ashar valley

Rest at the hotel through the hot hours and drive to the Ashar valley in the late afternoon. Maraya, a concert hall clad in 9,740 mirrors, reflects the surrounding cliffs and changes colour with the light. Inside access is only for events or with a booking at the rooftop restaurant. One hour.

Day 3: Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and the Harrat viewpoint

The Dadan and Jabal Ikmah tour also leaves from Winter Park, takes about two hours and costs from SAR 60, including transport and entry. Dadan was the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms in the first millennium BC, on the incense route. From the site you see the Lion Tombs, niches cut high in the cliff and guarded by carved lions. One hour.

Jabal Ikmah: the open-air library

Three kilometres away, the Jabal Ikmah canyon holds hundreds of inscriptions in Dadanitic, Aramaic and other ancient scripts, the largest concentration on the Arabian Peninsula. Take the boardwalk slowly: the best are at eye level. Forty-five minutes.

Rest in the afternoon. For sunset, drive up to the Harrat viewpoint on the lava plateau west of town, which looks over the whole oasis between the cliffs.

Day 4: Musa bin Nusayr castle, the oasis and the flight home

Check out and return to Old Town in the morning, with good light and no heat. Climb the castle stairs on the hilltop: from the top you see the mudbrick roofs, the oasis and the cliffs. Forty minutes.

Oasis Heritage Trail: a walk among the date palms

The oasis trail starts next to Old Town and winds between date palms, orange orchards and mudbrick walls, with signs on the old irrigation system. Walk the first section, about an hour and a quarter, and head back to the car. The airport is 35 minutes away.

Do you need a visa for Saudi Arabia?

Citizens of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and the EU can apply for the tourist eVisa online on the official portal, or get it on arrival. It is multiple entry and valid for a year, with stays of up to 90 days.

Holders of a valid, previously used US, UK or Schengen visa may also qualify. Apply only on the official portal and ignore sites that add fees.

When is the best time to visit AlUla?

From October to March days sit between 20 and 30°C and nights are cold, 5 to 12°C in winter: bring a jacket. It is festival season, including AlUla Skies from 6 to 15 November 2026, with drone shows and night experiences.

From May to September temperatures pass 40°C. The sites stay open, but you can only visit early in the morning or late in the day.

How to get to AlUla and get around

Fly to Riyadh or Jeddah and take the domestic flight of about 1h30 to AlUla. The airport is 35 km from Old Town.

Rent a car at the airport: there is no public transport between sites, and the roads are good and empty. Tours to Hegra, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah leave from Winter Park, with free parking. AlUla is a Dark Sky Reserve: on a moonless night, drive away from the lights to see the Milky Way.

Where to eat in AlUla: Saudi dishes, dates and coffee

The national dish is kabsa, rice spiced with cardamom, bay and dried lime, served with chicken or lamb, almonds and raisins. In traditional Saudi restaurants it comes on a platter to share.

AlUla is date and orange country. In any café, gahwa, light Saudi coffee with cardamom, comes with dates, and in winter stalls sell citrus from the oasis. Most restaurants are on the restored street of Old Town and in AlJadidah, open late.

What to avoid: planning dinner out of town without a booking, because desert resorts fill up, and looking for alcohol, which is banned in the country.

Are 4 days enough for AlUla?

Yes, for Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, Elephant Rock, Maraya and Old Town, with time to rest through the hot hours. With more days, add a night in the desert or the Sharaan reserve.
